Background

A short history of Apple's Mac laptops

Laptops since 1989

Apple's laptop history begins with the Macintosh Portable of 1989, a heavy battery-powered machine that was followed in 1991 by the PowerBook, the line that set the pattern of a keyboard pushed back behind palm rests and a central pointing device. PowerBooks served professionals through the 1990s and early 2000s, ending with the titanium and aluminium PowerBook G4. In 1999 Apple added the iBook for home and education buyers.

The move from PowerPC to Intel processors in 2006 reset the names. The MacBook Pro replaced the PowerBook and the MacBook replaced the iBook, and in 2008 the MacBook Air introduced a thin, light design without an optical drive. Aluminium unibody construction arrived the same year, Retina displays in 2012, and from 2015 and 2016 USB-C ports and the butterfly keyboard, which Apple later abandoned after widespread reliability complaints. A second processor transition began in November 2020 with Apple's own M1 chip, which brought much longer battery life and, in the Air, fanless running. Today the Air is the mainstream model in 13 and 15 inch sizes, the 14 and 16 inch MacBook Pro serves demanding professional work, and the MacBook Neo, launched in March 2026, sits below both as the entry-level Mac laptop.
