Background

About the Apple iBook G3

Sold 1999–2003

The Apple iBook G3 covers two quite different generations built around the PowerPC G3 processor. The clamshell models of 1999 to 2001 had a rounded two-tone case, a handle and a 12.1-inch 800 by 600 screen, with speeds from 300 to 466 MHz. From May 2001 the white Dual USB design replaced them, far lighter at 2.2 kg, with a 1024 by 768 display and processors that climbed from 500 to 900 MHz before the G4 arrived in October 2003.

The white G3 machines developed a reputation for video faults caused by the graphics chip losing contact with the logic board, and Apple ran a repair extension programme for them from January 2004. None can run anything later than Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.
