Background

About the Apple MacBook Pro 15"

Sold 2006–2019

The 15-inch MacBook Pro was Apple's mainstream professional notebook from 2006 to 2019. The first version, announced in January 2006, was the first Intel-based Mac notebook and replaced the 15-inch PowerBook G4. It passed through four designs: the original aluminium case (2006–2008), the unibody (2008–2012), the thinner Retina model without an optical drive (2012–2015) and the Thunderbolt 3 design with Touch Bar (2016–2019). The 16-inch MacBook Pro replaced it in November 2019.

Several generations have well-documented weaknesses: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics failures in 2007–2008 machines, Radeon graphics faults in 2011 models, and the butterfly keyboards of 2016–2019, which Apple covered with a keyboard service programme.
