Background

About the Apple iBook

Sold 1999–2006

Apple iBook was Apple's consumer and education laptop line, sold from July 1999 until May 2006, when the Intel-based MacBook replaced it. The first models were the brightly coloured clamshell machines with a carrying handle and a 12.1-inch screen, and they were among the first mainstream laptops offered with wireless networking, through an optional internal AirPort card. In May 2001 the range moved to a compact white design, later joined by a 14.1-inch version, and in October 2003 the PowerPC G3 processor gave way to the G4.

Every iBook is now a vintage machine. White G3 models are known for video faults traced to the logic board, which Apple covered with a repair extension programme from 2004, and original hard drives and batteries are well past their expected life.
