Background

About the Apple MacBook Air

Sold from 2008

Apple MacBook Air began in January 2008 as a thin 13.3-inch aluminium laptop that dropped the optical drive and most ports to save weight. A redesign in October 2010 added an 11.6-inch model and made flash storage standard, and through the following years the Air took over from the white MacBook as Apple's everyday laptop. A Retina display arrived in 2018, and in November 2020 the Air became one of the first Macs with Apple's M1 chip, running without a fan.

The flat-sided M2 design of 2022 brought a 13.6-inch screen and MagSafe charging, and a 15.3-inch version joined in 2023. M3, M4 and M5 updates followed in 2024, 2025 and 2026. Memory is soldered on every Air, so it cannot be increased after purchase.
