Background

About the Apple PowerBook G4 17" M9689

Introduced 2005

The Apple PowerBook G4 17" M9689 was introduced on 31 January 2005 with a 1.67 GHz processor and sold until 19 October that year. It added a Sudden Motion Sensor for the 100 GB hard drive, a trackpad that scrolls with two fingers, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, a brighter backlit keyboard and an 8x SuperDrive.

The Radeon 9700 graphics have 128 MB of memory and a dual-link DVI port, supporting external displays up to 2560 by 1600. The built-in screen remained 1440 by 900. This is the 17-inch version singled out for a display fault: some units developed permanent vertical lines on the panel after months of use, and replacement screens fitted at the time were reported to show the same problem.
