Background

A short history of Lenovo laptops

Laptops since 2005

Lenovo was founded in Beijing in 1984 as Legend and adopted the Lenovo name in 2003. It became a major laptop maker when it bought IBM's personal computer division, a deal announced in December 2004 and completed in 2005, which brought the ThinkPad business range and its engineering teams with it.

ThinkPad remains the corporate line: T and X series for mainstream and ultraportable business use, L and E series as lower-cost options, and P series mobile workstations. In January 2008 Lenovo added IdeaPad for home users, alongside plain Lenovo-branded budget machines such as the G series. Yoga, introduced in 2012, covers convertibles and premium thin laptops. Gaming models moved from the IdeaPad Y series to the separate Legion brand in 2017, with the cheaper LOQ line following in 2023. ThinkBook, launched in 2019, targets small businesses, and Lenovo also sells Chromebooks for schools and home use. Naming has shifted several times: numbered IdeaPads such as the 310 and 330 gave way to IdeaPad 1, 3 and 5 in 2020 and to IdeaPad Slim from 2023, while ThinkPads dropped numbers such as T490 for T14 with generation labels in 2020.
