Background

About the Apple PowerBook G4 15" M8980

Sold 2003–2004

M8980 is the order number of the first 15-inch aluminium PowerBook G4, in its 1 GHz Combo drive form. It replaced the Titanium model on 16 September 2003 and was sold until 19 April 2004.

The new 15-inch brought the aluminium design of the 12 and 17-inch models, along with FireWire 800, USB 2.0, Bluetooth and ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 graphics with 64 MB of memory. This lower configuration lacks the ambient light sensor fitted to the 1.25 GHz M8981. Its model number is A1046. Apple operated a repair extension programme for white spots appearing on 15-inch PowerBook displays, and the lower memory slot is a known point of failure on 15-inch aluminium PowerBooks generally.
