Background

About the Apple iBook G4

Sold 2003–2006

On 22 October 2003 Apple moved its consumer laptop to the PowerPC G4, creating the Apple iBook G4. The white case looked much like the late G3 models, but inside were a faster system bus, DDR memory, ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics, USB 2.0 ports and a slot-loading optical drive. It was sold in 12.1-inch and 14.1-inch sizes, both at 1024 by 768, with speeds rising from 800 MHz to 1.42 GHz over four revisions.

The mid-2005 models added a scrolling trackpad, a sudden motion sensor to protect the hard drive, and Bluetooth as standard. Production ended in May 2006 when the MacBook arrived. Some G4 iBooks suffer display faults like those of the G3, but Apple's repair programme did not extend to them.
