Background

About the Apple MacBook Pro 17" MA897

Sold 2007–2008

MA897 is the order number of the standard 17-inch MacBook Pro in the mid-2007 range: a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo on the Santa Rosa platform, sold from 5 June 2007 to 26 February 2008 with the model number A1229.

It introduced NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics to the 17-inch and could be ordered with a 1920 by 1200 screen instead of the usual 1680 by 1050. That graphics processor is the source of the model's reputation for failure. Apple stated in 2008 that some of these chips were defective and extended repair cover to four years from the date of purchase. Symptoms are scrambled or absent video, on the built-in screen and on external monitors alike.
