Background

About the Apple PowerBook

Sold 1991–2006

PowerBook was the name of Apple's notebook computers from October 1991, when the PowerBook 100, 140 and 170 were launched, until 2006. The early models established a layout later adopted across the industry, with the keyboard set back behind a palm rest and a central pointing device, and the 500 series of 1994 introduced the trackpad.

The line moved from Motorola 68000-family processors to PowerPC in 1995, then to the PowerBook G3 in 1997 and the PowerBook G4 in 2001. The Intel-based MacBook Pro replaced it during 2006. Every PowerBook is now a vintage machine: batteries are long expired, hard drives and optical drives are worn, and plastics, hinges and display cables on older models have become fragile.
