Background

A short history of Acer laptops

Laptops since 1976

Acer was founded in Taiwan in 1976 as Multitech by Stan Shih and a small group of partners, and took the Acer name in 1987. Its laptop business grew sharply after it bought the mobile computing division of Texas Instruments in 1997, a deal that brought in the TravelMate and Extensa business lines. The Aspire name, first used on a home desktop in 1995, was extended to consumer laptops and has been the company's volume seller ever since. The contract manufacturing arm was spun off as Wistron in 2000, leaving Acer to concentrate on design, marketing and sales. Buying Gateway (with its eMachines brand) in 2007 and Packard Bell in 2008 made it one of the largest PC vendors in the world. The Aspire One netbooks of 2008 and the long-battery Aspire Timeline models of 2009 were among its most widely sold machines of that period.

Today the laptop line-up is divided by purpose: Aspire for everyday home and student use, Swift for thin and light models, Spin for convertibles, TravelMate for business, Nitro and Predator for gaming, plus many Chromebooks. Since 2017 Aspire laptops have carried simple tier numbers (1, 3, 5 and 7) in place of the older four-digit model codes.
