Background

About the Apple PowerBook G4

Sold 2001–2006

The PowerBook G4 was Apple's professional notebook from January 2001 until the MacBook Pro replaced it in 2006. The first version, the 15-inch Titanium model, was about an inch thick with a widescreen display and a slot-loading optical drive. Its titanium shell was prone to paint flaking and to broken display hinges.

From 2003 the range was rebuilt in aluminium in three sizes: a compact 12-inch, a 15-inch and the first 17-inch notebook. These gained FireWire 800, backlit keyboards on the larger models and processors up to 1.67 GHz. A PowerBook G5 never appeared, and Apple moved its notebooks to Intel processors in 2006. Aluminium models have their own recorded faults, including failing memory slots on some 15-inch machines.
