Background

About the Apple PowerBook G4 17"

Sold 2003–2006

The 17-inch PowerBook G4, announced on 7 January 2003, was the first notebook computer with a 17-inch display. With the 12-inch model launched the same day it introduced the aluminium PowerBook case, and it brought the first FireWire 800 port on a Mac and a keyboard lit from beneath and controlled by ambient light sensors.

Five versions were made, from 1 GHz to 1.67 GHz, and the last was sold until 24 April 2006, when the 17-inch MacBook Pro took over. The widescreen panel was 1440 by 900 until the final model raised it to 1680 by 1050. It was aimed at users who needed a portable desktop replacement. Some early 2005 machines are known to develop permanent vertical lines on the display.
