Background

About the Apple MacBook Pro 17"

Sold 2006–2012

Apple sold a 17-inch MacBook Pro from April 2006 to June 2012. It was the largest and most expensive Mac notebook, favoured by photographers, video editors and others who wanted a desktop-sized workspace, and it succeeded the 17-inch PowerBook G4.

The original aluminium version ran from 2006 until January 2009, when the unibody model replaced it with a 1920 by 1200 display and a built-in battery. The 17-inch kept an ExpressCard/34 slot throughout, where the unibody 15-inch moved to an SD card reader. Apple dropped the size when the Retina MacBook Pro was announced in June 2012. Known weak points are the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics of 2007–2008 machines and the AMD Radeon graphics of the 2011 models.
