Background

A short history of ASUS laptops

Laptops since 1997

ASUS was founded in Taipei in April 1989 by four former Acer engineers and made its name with motherboards before moving into portable computers in the late 1990s. Its laptop business grew quickly in the 2000s, and in October 2007 the low-cost Eee PC created the market for netbooks, which ASUS kept in production until 2013. Contract manufacturing was separated into Pegatron, spun off fully in 2010, leaving ASUS as a brand-led company.

The modern ranges took shape from there. Republic of Gamers, launched in 2006, covers gaming machines: the older G series, then Strix, Zephyrus and Flow. TUF Gaming laptops arrived in 2018 as a cheaper gaming tier. Zenbooks, first sold in 2011, are the thin premium ultraportables, while the VivoBook, introduced in 2012 and later restyled Vivobook, is the mainstream home and student line. Business buyers are served by the ExpertBook, creative professionals by ProArt machines, and there is a long-running series of Chromebooks. Older model letters such as K, N, F, X, M and S date from before these names were tidied up. Recent years have brought OLED screens across most ranges and, from 2024, Copilot+ PCs using Qualcomm, AMD and Intel processors. ASUS ranks among the five largest PC vendors worldwide.
