Background

A short history of Sony VAIO laptops

Sony launched the VAIO brand in 1996 with desktop PCs and added notebooks in 1997. The model that made its name was the PCG-505, a very thin magnesium-bodied portable that set the pattern for later slim VAIOs, and Sony went on to build a reputation for compact, carefully styled machines such as the C1 PictureBook, the TR and TX travel notebooks and the carbon-fibre Z series. Model prefixes mark the generations. PCG notebooks and PCV desktops cover the years to about 2004. VGN notebooks and VGC desktops followed, including the 17-inch AR multimedia line that brought Blu-ray to VAIO notebooks in 2006, the 13.3-inch SZ business series and the FZ, FW, CR and NW home ranges. From late 2009 the prefix changed to VPC, used for the E, C, S, F and Z series, and from 2012 to SV for the final E, S, T, Fit, Pro and Duo families.

Faced with falling sales, Sony announced in February 2014 that it would leave the PC business, and the brand passed to VAIO Corporation, a new company backed by the investment fund Japan Industrial Partners and based at the former Sony plant in Azumino, Nagano. VAIO continues to make notebooks, mainly for Japan, and the Japanese electronics retailer Nojima agreed to take a controlling stake in late 2024. Sony-built machines are therefore all more than a decade old.
