Background

About the Sony VAIO PCG F Series

Sold 1999–2001

Sony VAIO PCG F Series notebooks were full-size, all-in-one machines sold from 1999 until about 2001, aimed at home users and small offices who wanted a desktop substitute instead of something light. Unlike the slim 505 models of the same period, the F chassis carried its floppy drive and CD or DVD drive on board, and came with larger screens. Processors were drawn from Intel's mobile Celeron, Pentium II and Pentium III families as the range was refreshed.

The FX series replaced it in 2001. Any F Series still in use is around a quarter of a century old, so expect an exhausted battery, a slow and possibly failing mechanical hard drive, tired screen backlighting and plastics that crack easily.
