Background

About the Sony VAIO PCV W Series

Sold 2002–2004

Sony VAIO PCV W Series computers are all-in-one desktops, first sold in 2002, and are among the more unusual VAIO designs. The screen, system and speakers form a single unit, and the keyboard is hinged to the front edge so that it folds up against the lower part of the display when not in use. With the keyboard raised the machine was intended to serve as a music player and clock; folded down, it worked as an ordinary PC.

The first models had a 15.3-inch widescreen panel and later ones a 17.5-inch panel with a television tuner. The range ran until about 2004. With age, hard drives, optical drives and screen backlights are the usual failures, and parts specific to the folding design are difficult to source.
