Background

About the Sony VAIO PCG Series

Sold 1997–2004

Sony VAIO PCG Series is the umbrella for the first generation of VAIO notebooks, sold from 1997 until Sony switched to VGN model numbers in 2004. The letters after the prefix identify the family: the slim 505, N505 and Z505 portables, the C1 PictureBook miniature, the F, FX and GR desktop replacements, the SR, R505, V505 and TR travel machines, and the late Pentium 4 based K and GRT models.

Confusingly, Sony kept PCG as a regulatory product code long afterwards, so many later VGN, VPC and SV notebooks carry a PCG number on the label underneath even though that is not their sales name. A true PCG-era notebook is now more than twenty years old, with battery, hard drive and backlight wear to match.
