Background

About the Sony VAIO PCV V Series

Sold 2003–2004

The Sony VAIO PCV V Series is an all-in-one desktop computer, not a laptop. Introduced in 2003, it placed the whole PC, including the optical drive and speakers, behind a flat LCD panel on a stand, with a separate keyboard and mouse. The idea was a computer that could double as a small television and DVD player in a bedroom or study, and models were offered with 15-inch and 17-inch screens and a built-in television tuner.

It was replaced in 2004 by the VGC-V models under Sony's new naming scheme. All-in-one designs pack desktop parts into a confined space, so heat, fan noise and dust build-up are common with age, and the screen backlight, power circuitry and hard drive are the parts most often needing attention.
