Background

About the Sony VAIO PCG R Series

Sold 2001–2003

Sony VAIO PCG R Series covers the PCG-R505, sold from 2001 to 2003, and the closely related PCG-R600 models offered in Europe. It took over from the Z505 as Sony's slim 12.1-inch business and travel notebook. The main unit was thin and light because it left out the optical drive, which lived in a matching docking base that the notebook sat on when used at a desk.

Processors came from the mobile Pentium III and Celeron families. In 2003 the V505 replaced it, bringing the optical drive into the notebook itself. After two decades the battery and the original hard drive are usually worn out, and a machine that has lost its docking base has no optical drive at all.
