Background

About the Sony VAIO PCG K Series

Sold 2004–2005

The Sony VAIO PCG K Series was a budget desktop-replacement notebook sold in 2004 and 2005, and one of the last ranges to carry the PCG prefix before Sony moved its notebooks over to VGN model numbers. It was intended for home users who wanted a large screen at the lower end of the VAIO range, with 15-inch standard or 15.4-inch widescreen panels depending on the model.

K Series machines used Intel Pentium 4 and Celeron processors, which run hot and draw a lot of power in a notebook, so the chassis is thick and battery life is short. Fans and heatsinks clogged with dust, and the overheating and shutdowns that follow, are typical of this kind of design, alongside ageing hard drives and batteries.
