Background

About the Sony VAIO PCG GR Series

Sold 2001–2002

Introduced in 2001, the Sony VAIO PCG GR Series was a desktop-replacement notebook pitched at users who wanted a large, high-resolution screen and room for interchangeable drives. It arrived with Intel mobile Pentium III processors and offered 14.1-inch and 15-inch displays, with the better models using panels of much higher resolution than the XGA screens common at the time.

The original GR was followed from 2002 by the GRX, GRZ, GRS and GRT derivatives, which moved to Pentium 4 processors and, on some GRX models, a 16.1-inch screen. These are heavy machines by modern standards. With age, the common problems are dead batteries, noisy or failing hard drives, dim backlights and worn hinges.
