Background

About the Sony VAIO PCV LX Series

Sold 2000–2002

Despite sitting among notebook ranges, the Sony VAIO PCV LX Series is a desktop computer. Sold from 2000 to around 2002, it paired a compact system unit with a matching flat LCD monitor at a time when most home PCs still came with bulky CRT displays. The best-known versions were marketed as the Slimtop Pen Tablet: their screen could be tilted down to a drawing angle and used with a pressure-sensitive stylus for sketching and photo retouching.

The LX used Intel desktop processors of the period and was aimed at design-conscious home users and hobbyist artists. The monitor and base unit were made to work together, so a fault in either affects the whole system, and ageing hard drives, power supplies and backlights are the main concerns today.
