Background

About the Sony VAIO PCG Q Series

Sold around 2000–2001

The Sony VAIO PCG Q Series is best understood as the PCG-QR family, a consumer notebook sold around 2000 and 2001. Its distinguishing feature was the styling: the case incorporated a carrying handle, giving it something of the look of a small briefcase, and it was marketed to home users and students more than to business buyers. Inside it was a conventional all-in-one notebook of its day, built around Intel mobile Celeron and Pentium III processors.

The QR was a short-lived design. Few remain in service, and those that do share the problems of any notebook of this age: batteries that no longer hold charge, mechanical hard drives close to failure, fading backlights and plastics that have become brittle.
