Background

About the Sony VAIO VGN FZ Series

Sold 2007–2008

The Sony VAIO VGN FZ Series was Sony's 15.4-inch mainstream notebook from mid-2007 until the FW replaced it in 2008. Built on the Santa Rosa generation of Intel Core 2 Duo processors, it was comparatively light for its screen size and offered an HDMI output and, on upper models, a Blu-ray drive.

Many versions were fitted with NVIDIA GeForce 8400M graphics, a chip family affected by a widely documented packaging and solder defect. On the FZ this shows as a blank screen, lines or distorted images, and Sony offered extended warranty cover for affected models at the time. That cover ended long ago, and the fault remains a leading reason these machines stop working.
