Background

About the Sony VAIO PCG Z Series

Two quite different notebooks share the Sony VAIO PCG Z Series name. The first is the PCG-Z505, sold from 1999 to 2001, which was the 12.1-inch member of the slim 505 family: a thin magnesium-cased business notebook with external floppy and optical drives. The second is the PCG-Z1 of 2003, a 14.1-inch thin-and-light machine with a high-resolution screen, a built-in optical drive and Intel's then-new Pentium M processor and Centrino platform.

Both were premium models for mobile professionals, and the Z name later returned on the VGN-Z of 2008. The Z505 is now well over twenty years old, with the expected failures of age. The Z1 is more usable but shares the worn batteries, ageing hard drives and fading backlights of its generation.
