Background

About the Dell Vostro 1400

Sold 2007–2008

One of the four laptops that opened the Vostro brand in July 2007, the Dell Vostro 1400 has a 14.1-inch widescreen display and Intel Core 2 Duo processors on the Santa Rosa platform. Its chassis was closely related to the consumer Inspiron 1420, sold in plain black and without the trial software Dell loaded on home machines.

Graphics were either Intel GMA X3100 or an NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS. The NVIDIA version is the one to be wary of, since Dell named the Vostro 1400 among the models affected by the widely reported NVIDIA graphics chip failures of that period, which typically show as lines on screen, no image or a failure to start. The 13.3-inch Vostro 1310 effectively replaced it in 2008.
