Background

About the Dell Latitude X1

Sold 2005–2006

When it was introduced in April 2005, the Dell Latitude X1 was the smallest and lightest laptop Dell had made, at about 2.5 pounds. Built on Intel's Centrino platform with a Pentium M processor, it was aimed squarely at business travellers. There is no internal optical drive, and the case carries both Secure Digital and CompactFlash card slots as well as USB, FireWire, network and modem ports.

It succeeded the X300 as the lightest Latitude and was itself replaced in 2006 by the D420. The very thin case leaves little room for expansion, so external drives and docks were part of the package. Original batteries are now two decades old, and a healthy pack is the hardest thing to find.
