Background

About the Dell Latitude XPi CD

Sold 1996–1997

As its name suggests, the Dell Latitude XPi CD was the version of Dell's mid-1990s Pentium flagship with a built-in CD-ROM drive, at a time when multimedia was becoming an expected feature of business portables. It sat at the top of the Latitude range above the lower-priced LM, and its model codes followed the usual pattern of processor speed followed by letters for the display.

It belongs to the generation immediately before the Latitude CP, which replaced it in late 1997 with a design about an inch thinner and two pounds lighter. Machines of this age are thick and heavy by later standards. Their batteries will no longer charge, and CD-ROM drives and hard disks from the period often fail.
