Background

About the Dell Latitude D630

Sold 2007–2008

The Dell Latitude D630 of 2007 was the last and most widely used of the mainstream D-series laptops. Outwardly close to the D620, it moved to Intel's Santa Rosa platform with the 965 chipset, Core 2 Duo processors on an 800 MHz bus, optional Turbo Memory and draft-N wireless. With a later BIOS it can address 8 GB of memory, more than Dell originally listed.

Its known weakness is the optional NVIDIA graphics chip, which overheats and suffers cracked solder joints, producing a blank or corrupted display. NVIDIA was held liable and a class action settlement provided replacement motherboards for some owners. Versions with Intel integrated graphics avoid the problem. The E6400 replaced the D630 in 2008.
