Background

About the Dell Latitude D830

Sold 2007–2008

Last of the 15.4-inch D-series machines, the Dell Latitude D830 was released in 2007 on the same Core 2 Duo generation as the D630. It has an ExpressCard slot and stereo speakers, shares its hardware with the Precision M4300 mobile workstation and, with updated firmware, accepts 8 GB of memory.

The D830 was favoured where a large, high-resolution display mattered more than weight. Its documented weak point is the NVIDIA graphics chip fitted to many units: this generation of NVIDIA parts overheats and cracks its solder joints, which led to legal action against the chip maker and to replacement motherboards for some owners. The E6500 replaced the D830 in 2008.
