Background

About the Dell Latitude C840

Sold 2002–2003

Introduced in 2002, the Dell Latitude C840 moved Dell's largest C-family business laptop from the Pentium III-M of the C810 to the Mobile Pentium 4-M with DDR memory, its two slots taking up to 2 GB in total. It kept the big 15-inch chassis and discrete NVIDIA graphics, and the same hardware was sold to home buyers as the Inspiron 8200 and to engineers as the Precision M50.

The C840 is often cited as the last Dell laptop to pair a fixed optical drive with a separate modular bay, so a second battery or drive could be fitted without giving up the optical drive. The widescreen Latitude D800 replaced it in 2003. At this age, hard drives, batteries and display backlights are the usual weak points.
