Background

About the Dell Latitude C540

Sold 2002–2003

The Dell Latitude C540 was the last of the value models in the Latitude C family, introduced in 2002. It was the cheaper stablemate of the Latitude C640 and, like that model, moved to the Mobile Pentium 4-M generation of processors, with mobile Celeron chips in the lowest-priced versions.

Dell documented the C540 and C640 together, and the two have much in common, including the family's interchangeable bay modules and docking options. It was superseded in 2003 when the D series arrived, with the Latitude D500 and D505 taking over the value role. Pentium 4-M machines run warm, so a dust-clogged fan adds to the usual age-related battery and hard drive problems.
