Background

About the Dell Inspiron 9100

Sold 2004–2005

The Dell Inspiron 9100 of 2004 was a very large desktop replacement built around desktop Pentium 4 processors rather than mobile parts. It had a 15.4-inch widescreen display and ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 or 9800 graphics, and at roughly 9 lb (about 4 kg) it was intended to move from room to room rather than travel.

It is essentially the same machine as the first-generation Inspiron XPS gaming laptop, sold under the regular Inspiron name. The combination of a desktop processor and powerful graphics makes cooling critical, so blocked heatsinks, worn fans and heat-related faults are the main concerns, along with batteries that were part of Dell's 2006 recall.
