About the Dell Inspiron 1100

Sold 2003–2004

Released in 2003, the Dell Inspiron 1100 was a budget laptop with a 14.1-inch or 15-inch XGA screen and an Intel Celeron or Pentium 4 processor, the cheaper relative of the Inspiron 5100. It gave home buyers a full-size machine at a low price, at the cost of weight, battery life and heat.

That heat became its defining problem. The Inspiron 1100, 1150, 5100, 5150 and 5160 were named in class action lawsuits alleging overheating and premature motherboard failure, and a Canadian case filed in 2005 was later settled. Anyone still running one should expect a blocked heatsink, a worn-out battery and an ageing hard drive.
