Background

About the Dell Latitude L400

Sold 2000–2001

The Dell Latitude L400 was Dell's ultraportable business laptop of 2000 and 2001, taking over from the Latitude LS. It has a 12.1-inch XGA active-matrix display and a mobile Pentium III processor with Intel SpeedStep, with 64, 128 or 256 MB of SDRAM specified at purchase. A 56K modem and a 3Com 10/100 network adapter are built in, along with a single PC Card slot.

To keep size down, the floppy, CD, DVD or Zip drive sits in an external media bay that plugs into the side, and a port replicator was available for desk use. Batteries came in four and six-cell sizes. The C400 replaced it. Finding a working external media bay and cable is often the practical difficulty with these machines today.
