Background

About the Dell Latitude L Series

Mid-1990s to 2001

Dell Latitude L Series is a loose grouping, not a single design: Dell used the letter L on several unrelated Latitude models between the mid-1990s and 2001. The early LX and LM were lower-priced companions to the Latitude XPi in the 486 and Pentium years. The later LT, LS and L400 were something different, small lightweight machines for travellers, sold beside the full-size CP and C-family corporate laptops.

The LT of early 1999 had an 11.3-inch screen and weighed just over three pounds, the LS grew to a 12.1-inch display, and the L400 of 2000 added a SpeedStep Pentium III. All three relied on external floppy and optical drives. Every L-series machine is now a vintage computer, with the battery and hard drive failures that implies.
