Background

About the Dell Latitude D400

Sold 2003–2005

Dell's ultraportable for the first D-series generation, the Dell Latitude D400 appeared in 2003 as the travel-weight companion to the D600. It combined a 12.1-inch XGA screen with a Pentium M processor and Intel's 855GM chipset with integrated graphics. To save weight there was no built-in optical drive: discs were handled through an external D/Bay module or a docking base.

It took the place of the earlier C400 and was followed in 2005 by the outwardly similar D410. The D400 predates the widescreen and solid-state changes that came later in the D4xx line, so it relies on a conventional mechanical hard drive, which along with the battery is the component most often needing replacement now.
