Background

About the Dell Inspiron 5000

Sold 2000–2001

Launched in 2000, the Dell Inspiron 5000 was the standard all-in-one model in Dell's consumer laptop line, placed between the entry-level Inspiron 3800 and the larger Inspiron 7500 desktop replacement. It was built around mobile Pentium III processors and came with either a 14.1-inch XGA screen or a 15-inch panel at the sharper 1400 by 1050 resolution, which was unusual for a mid-priced laptop at the time.

Later the same year it was joined by the Inspiron 5000e, which added a still higher resolution display option. Any Inspiron 5000 still in use is around a quarter of a century old: original batteries no longer hold charge, and the small IDE hard drives of the period are well past their expected life.
