About the Dell Inspiron 5150

Sold 2003–2004

The Dell Inspiron 5150 was the faster sibling of the Inspiron 5100, released in 2003. It used Mobile Pentium 4 processors running at around 3 GHz and a 15-inch display, with a UXGA panel offered above the standard XGA screen, making it a desktop replacement for home users who wanted high clock speeds at a moderate price.

The model is remembered for reliability trouble. Besides the overheating common to the whole 5100 family, the 5150 had a specific flaw in which a tab on the palmrest panel pressed on the motherboard and eventually broke the solder under a chip, causing sudden shutdowns. Dell revised later production, and the series was covered by a class action settlement.
