About the Dell Inspiron 5100

Sold 2003–2004

Released in 2003, the Dell Inspiron 5100 was a large, affordable home laptop that used desktop-class Pentium 4 processors rather than mobile chips, paired with ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 graphics and a 14.1-inch or 15-inch display. That choice gave strong performance for the money but made the machine thick, heavy and hot-running.

Heat is the model's well-documented weakness. The 5100 family, which also included the Inspiron 1100, 1150, 5150 and 5160, was the subject of class action lawsuits over overheating, premature motherboard failure and power supply problems. Dust-clogged heatsinks make matters worse on any example that has not been cleaned.
