Background

About the IBM ThinkPad G Series

Sold 2003–2005

IBM ThinkPad G Series was a budget desktop-replacement line that began with the G40 in 2003. Unusually for a ThinkPad it used desktop Celeron and Pentium 4 processors in place of mobile chips, in a thick chassis weighing about 3.5 kg, with 14 or 15-inch screens and an internal floppy drive, something other ThinkPads had already dropped. The G41 followed in October 2004 with Hyper-Threading Pentium 4 options and optional NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 graphics, and a G50 was sold only in Japan.

The series ended in 2005, with the R series taking its place. These machines run hot by laptop standards, so a clean fan and heatsink matter more than usual, and after twenty years the battery and hard drive are normally due for replacement.
