Background

A short history of Toshiba and Dynabook laptops

Laptops since 1985

Toshiba was one of the founders of the portable PC market. Its T1100 of 1985 is widely regarded as the first mass-market IBM-compatible laptop, and through the 1990s the company was among the largest notebook makers in the world. In Japan it used the DynaBook name from 1989. The main families were established in the 1990s. Satellite, introduced early in the decade, covered home and general-purpose laptops, with Satellite Pro as its small-business counterpart. Portege, from 1994, was the thin and light line and later included tablet convertibles and ultrabooks. Tecra, which followed in the mid-1990s, was the corporate range. Libretto was a series of very small subnotebooks, and Qosmio, launched in 2004, combined a laptop with television and audio features before turning into a gaming brand.

In 2016 Toshiba withdrew from consumer laptops in Europe and other markets outside Japan to concentrate on business machines, which ended the Satellite and Qosmio consumer lines. In 2018 it sold a majority stake of 80.1 per cent in its PC subsidiary to Sharp, and in January 2019 the business was renamed Dynabook. Sharp bought the remaining shares in 2020. Dynabook continues the Portege, Tecra and Satellite Pro names on business and education laptops.
