Background

A short history of Samsung laptops

Laptops since 1994

Samsung Electronics entered the laptop market in 1994 and adopted the Sens name the following year, a brand it kept in South Korea for two decades. From 2001 the machines were grouped by letter: Q for ultraportables, P and later R for mainstream models, X for thin-and-light designs. The NC10 of 2008 made Samsung one of the best-known makers of Atom netbooks, a position it held with the N series that followed. In 2011 the range was reorganised into numbered tiers: Series 3 at entry level, Series 5 in the middle, Series 7 for performance and the thin aluminium Series 9 at the top, alongside some of the first Chromebooks. In 2013 the Windows machines moved to the ATIV brand, and in 2014 Samsung stopped selling laptops in Europe. From 2016 the remaining ranges were sold simply as Samsung Notebook.

The name Galaxy Book, first used on a Windows tablet in 2017, passed to conventional laptops in 2019, and Samsung returned to the British market in 2020. Since 2021 the family has centred on AMOLED-screened Pro and Pro 360 models, joined by the Ultra in 2023, the Snapdragon-based Edge in 2024 and the Book6 generation in 2026.
