Background

A short history of MSI laptops

Laptops since 2004

MSI, short for Micro-Star International, was founded in Taiwan in August 1986 and built its name on motherboards and graphics cards before moving into portable computers. Its first laptop, the M510C, appeared in 2004, and the small, low-cost Wind of 2008 brought the brand to a much wider audience. In 2008 the company also committed to PC gaming, and its G series machines became the core of the laptop business: GT for large desktop replacements, GS for thin designs, GE for high-performance mid-size models, and GP, GL and GF for progressively more affordable gaming laptops. In 2016 a market research institute ranked MSI the largest supplier of gaming laptops worldwide.

From 2018 MSI widened its range to content creation and office work, and in September 2020 it grouped the Modern, Prestige and Summit lines under a separate business logo. Around 2021 the gaming families began trading letter codes for names, so that the line-up now runs from Titan, Raider and Stealth at the top through Vector, Crosshair, Pulse, Sword and Katana to the entry-level Cyborg and Thin. Since 2024 an AI suffix has marked models with Intel Core Ultra or AMD Ryzen AI processors.
