Background

About the IBM ThinkPad

Sold 1992–2007

IBM ThinkPad covers the business laptops IBM sold from October 1992 until Lenovo took over its personal computer division in 2005, together with the IBM-badged models Lenovo went on building until 2007, when the T61 generation dropped the IBM logo. Common traits run through nearly all of them: a black case, a red TrackPoint stick with its buttons below the space bar, a keyboard with long key travel and, on many later models, a ThinkLight in the lid and swappable UltraBay drives.

Every IBM-badged machine is now close to twenty years old or more. Whatever the model, the usual age-related faults are exhausted main and clock batteries, worn mechanical hard drives, dim fluorescent screen backlights and case plastics that have turned brittle.
