Background

A short history of Alienware laptops

Laptops since 1996

Alienware began in Miami, Florida, in 1996, founded by Nelson Gonzalez and Alex Aguila as Sakai of Miami and renamed Alienware in 1999. It built made-to-order gaming desktops first and added laptops in the early 2000s under the Area-51m name, using chassis bought in from specialist manufacturers. Dell bought the company in March 2006 and has run it as its gaming brand ever since.

The first laptop developed under Dell was the M17x of June 2009, followed by the M15x, the 11.6-inch M11x, the M14x and the 18.4-inch M18x. In 2013 the M prefix was dropped for the Alienware 14, 17 and 18, and from late 2014 the Alienware 13, 15 and 17 added a port for the external Graphics Amplifier. Thinner m15 and m17 models arrived from 2018, joined in 2019 by the Area-51m with desktop processors and the rounded Legend styling. The slim x15 and x17 followed in 2021 and the x14 in 2022, then the 16-inch and 18-inch m16, m18 and x16 in 2023. In 2025 the range was reorganised again: Area-51 became the name for the high-end 16-inch and 18-inch laptops and Aurora for the more affordable 16-inch models, which also took over from Dell's G series.
